All remains and traces of animals and plants older than 10,000 years are called fossils. The most famous group of fossils are the so-called ammonites:
Ammonites - The ammonites are a species-rich, extinct group of exclusively marine, fossil cephalopods (Cephalopoda), which are closely related to the Nautilus. They were contemporaries of the dinosaurs, which were destroyed 65 million years ago by a planetoid impact which destroyed about 70% of all other animal species at that time, and thus probably died out at the same time. Over 5,000 ammonite genera are known. The animals were able to regulate the amount of gas or liquid in the chambered part of the shell and thus change their buoyancy in the water. Their size lay between a few mm and over 2 m housing diameter.
Ammonites represent a large number of the leading fossils from their first appearance in the Devonian until their extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period.
That means that one can classify earth layers temporally by them. Often the temporal delimitation of marine sediments is done exclusively by ammonites. They are therefore of great importance in geology and palaeontology.
Orthoceras - General: Orthoceras are fossils, more precisely fossilized cephalopods. The Orthoceras developed more than half a billion years ago. They were squid-like beasts that reached a length of 5 meters in the Ordovician. In later epochs the cephalopods remained considerably smaller. Muscular tentacles on his head earned him his name. They were good, fast swimmers and cruel carnivorous robbers. Orthoceras are available as sculptures, plates and in miniature editions of a few centimetres.
Location: Orthoceras are mined in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. 6 hours are needed to knock a cephalopod free from the very hard rock. The Orthoceras fossil almost looks like metal due to the composition of the material. It is glossy black, very hard and has a metallic sound.
